Bruce Davidson

Bruce Davidson, the Magnum photographer, will be in London next week signing copies of his big new retrospective book Outside / Inside. He will also have 2 new exhibitions going on, one at Somerset House and I can't remember where the other one is but I highly reccomend everybody goes because he is my favourite photographer and the best photographer. I will be attending all these events, as he is the man responsible for me picking up a camera and attempting photography. Well, him and Ed Van Der Elsken anyway. He is an old man now, and a complete legend in my world, I will be honoured to meet him at the book signing!

Few days ago, as i was walking home, i got to pet a Beautiful Majestic Owl ( yes it was alive and not taxidermy), i know it seems random as i live in a big city and it was day time, but instead on elaborating on the whys that produce this event, i am instead going to linger on the magical feeling that it left on me, just as if i was jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth.

One of my favourite songs, I was obsessed it at around 21, 22. It's based loosely around Kafka's The Metamorphosis and the Dosteyevsky short novel Notes From The Underground. I love it.

I love this song so much - I first came across it whilst watching the amazing Dennis Hopper film 'Out Of The Blue' starring the fantastic Linda Manz (which you can't even get on DVD in this country, stupid). In that, the main theme is Neil Young performing this song, acoustically, like this....



That was the only version I knew for ages, but then I realised that the original was not like that at all, it was a much more rocking collaborative effort with Devo from Young's film 'Human Highway'. Almost as appealing, in a mental illness kind of way. I need to see that film.



I love the sad, mournful tone of the acoustic version. I can never work out if I like the lyrics or not, I think I do, it definately works well in the Dennis Hopper film anyway.

I hope you will receive my praise and thanks for influencing me all those years when instead of listening to the so called coolest "Indie" or "Dance" what have you music, i listened to your music instead and i loved it.





Some People might consider you a eccentric, i think you are what beauty truly is, a exotic bird, something that we are not quiet sure where it came from but wherever that place might be, it must truly be amazing.

Cosmic canines

Today I have been thinking about space and Laika the space dog, that the Soviet union sent into orbit in 1958. It was before they sent a human and they were testing to see how animals would react to the atmosphere, weigthlessness and such. They always knew that Laika would die however, as the rocket was never intended to return to earth. Since Laika there were many other animals sent to space including Ham the Chimp a few years later by the US and other dogs, as well as guinea pigs who China sent in 1990.







I've never really tried to get into the Divine Comedy, but I found out they had written a piece of music about Laika, called Laika's Theme.

And one of my favourite space themed compositions, Gayanne Ballet Suite (Adagio) by Aram Khachaturian from the Stanley Kubrick and Athur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is one of the most melancholy, dystopic pieces of music, and really suits the film.
