Few days ago, as i was walking home, i got to pet a Beautiful Majestic Owl ( yes it was alive and not taxidermy), i know it seems random as i live in a big city and it was day time, but instead on elaborating on the whys that produce this event, i am instead going to linger on the magical feeling that it left on me, just as if i was jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth.
Wait! I got Boots just like those!
Another Halloween outfit for J.B and i.
God, i do hope they NEVER make a remake of this movie!
One of my favourite songs, I was obsessed it at around 21, 22. It's based loosely around Kafka's The Metamorphosis and the Dosteyevsky short novel Notes From The Underground. I love it.
I am angry I am ill and I'm as ugly as sin My irritability keeps me alive and kicking I know the meaning of life, it doesn't help me a bit I know beauty and I know a good thing when I see it
This is a song from under the floorboards This is a song from where the wall is cracked My force of habit, I am an insect I have to confess I'm proud as hell of that fact
I know the highest and the best I accord them all due respect But the brightest jewel inside of me Glows with pleasure at my own stupidity
I used to make phantoms I could later chase Images of all that could be desired Then I got tired of counting all of these blessings And then I just got tired
I love this song so much - I first came across it whilst watching the amazing Dennis Hopper film 'Out Of The Blue' starring the fantastic Linda Manz (which you can't even get on DVD in this country, stupid). In that, the main theme is Neil Young performing this song, acoustically, like this....
That was the only version I knew for ages, but then I realised that the original was not like that at all, it was a much more rocking collaborative effort with Devo from Young's film 'Human Highway'. Almost as appealing, in a mental illness kind of way. I need to see that film.
I love the sad, mournful tone of the acoustic version. I can never work out if I like the lyrics or not, I think I do, it definately works well in the Dennis Hopper film anyway.
Out of The Blue (Hey Hey, My My) by Neil Young
My my, hey hey Rock and roll is here to stay It's better to burn out Than to fade away My my, hey hey.
Out of the blue and into the black They give you this, but you pay for that And once you're gone, you can never come back When you're out of the blue and into the black.
The king is gone but he's not forgotten This is the story of a Johnny Rotten It's better to burn out than it is to rust The king is gone but he's not forgotten.
Hey hey, my my Rock and roll can never die There's more to the picture Than meets the eye. Hey hey, my my.
Dearest Yma Sumac. I hope that wherever you are now, you are in a place where they deserve having such a unique, powerful, extremely talented force of nature. I hope you will receive my praise and thanks for influencing me all those years when instead of listening to the so called coolest "Indie" or "Dance" what have you music, i listened to your music instead and i loved it.
Some People might consider you a eccentric, i think you are what beauty truly is, a exotic bird, something that we are not quiet sure where it came from but wherever that place might be, it must truly be amazing.
Today I have been thinking about space and Laika the space dog, that the Soviet union sent into orbit in 1958. It was before they sent a human and they were testing to see how animals would react to the atmosphere, weigthlessness and such. They always knew that Laika would die however, as the rocket was never intended to return to earth. Since Laika there were many other animals sent to space including Ham the Chimp a few years later by the US and other dogs, as well as guinea pigs who China sent in 1990.
I've never really tried to get into the Divine Comedy, but I found out they had written a piece of music about Laika, called Laika's Theme.
And one of my favourite space themed compositions, Gayanne Ballet Suite (Adagio) by Aram Khachaturian from the Stanley Kubrick and Athur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is one of the most melancholy, dystopic pieces of music, and really suits the film.
Just came across the Swedish group Little Dragon, this is one of the stand out tracks from last year's Machine Dreams album. Gives my head a rest from all that italo business I've been mainlining for the past few months.... JB
I had to escape, the city was sticky and cruel Maybe i should have called you first But i was dying to get to you I was dreaming while i drove The long straight road ahead, uh huh yeah Could taste your sweet kisses Your arms opened wide This fever for you is just burning me up inside
I drove all night to get to you, is that alright? I drove all night, crept in your room Woke you from your sleep, to make love to you Is that alright? I drove all night
What in this world keeps us from falling apart No matter where i go i hear the beating of our one heart I think about you when the night is cold and dark uh huh yeah No one can move me the way that you do Nothing erases this feeling between me and you oooh
I drove all night to get to you, is that alright? I drove all night, crept in your room Woke you from your sleep to make love to you Is that alright, I drove all night
Could taste your sweet kisses, your arms opened wide This fever for you is just burning me up inside
I drove all night to get to you, is that alright? I drove all night, crept in your room Is that alright? i drove all night I drove all night to get to you is that alright?? I drove all night crept in your room..
Blur recording a second version of To The End with the one and only Francoise Hardy. Amazed there is video footage of this collaboration, I was imagining how great it would be if there was a photograph or some video of this moment years agao, but had given up on it actually existing. But then, out of nowhere on YouTube.... : D
I Think the 90's were a great year for experimenting Female musicians, finally starting to get deserved recognition and some Respect, we had Sonic Youth in the forefront with Kim Gordon telling you about her friend Goo and so on,Pixies/Breeders with Kim deal, Hole, My Bloody valentine,L7, PJ Harvey, Dee-Lite with Lady miss Kier, Diamanda Galas, Tori Amos, Mazzy Star, i mean i could go on and on (Badhu!!)but i will stop here and have a daydreaming break listening to Lush.
To stay within the spirit of dear little ol' France within the 1930's, and since J.B had the great idea to introduce the Genius vision of Jean Vigo, i though we should therefore stay within the decadence and politically incorrect spirit of the Frenchies, may the party go on and Vive la Guillotine!!!
Classic Australian industrial band Severed Heads with their most famous track, Dead Eyes Opened. The analogue synths sound amazing, as do songs about decapitation read in the style of a children's bedtime story.
This is a song that i truly adore, i find myself singing it sometimes as i walk along the street.Let's start with France Gall's version.(Note to self: Love that Gilbert Becaud poster, can i have it?!).
France Gall Rules! Okay, now this is April March's version, it's someone's homemade video, (so thank you Someone!) i have not master the art of posting Mp3 files yet, but i will get down to it.
And Now, Julien Doré,who has a gift to make songs he covers sound so simply beautiful.
Of course this song is about Love, what did you expect, it's French!! S.M
Will you stay in our Lovers' Story If you stay you won't be sorry 'Cause we believe in you Soon you'll grow so take a chance With a couple of Kooks Hung up on romancing
We bought a lot of things to keep you warm and dry And a funny old crib on which the paint won't dry I bought you a pair of shoes A trumpet you can blow And a book of rules On what to say to people when they pick on you 'Cause if you stay with us you're gonna be pretty Kookie too
And if you ever have to go to school Remember how they messed up this old fool Don't pick fights with the bullies or the cads 'Cause I'm not much cop at punching other people's Dads And if the homework brings you down Then we'll throw it on the fire And take the car downtown.
Only The Thin White Duke could make a song that sums up J.B, our Friends and little ol' me .
Hard rocking cover of that Dire Straits song, 'Money For Nothing' by Royal Trux. This was a DJ staple of mine for years, might have to start dropping it in again :) Jennifer's voice is crazy here, sounds like she is vomiting as she 'sings'.
You are hardcore, you make me hard. You name the drama and I'll play the part. It seems I saw you in some teenage wet dream. I like your get up if you know what I mean. I want it bad. I want it now. Oh can't you see I'm ready now. I've seen all the pictures, I've studied them forever. I wanna make a movie so let's star in it together. Don't make a move 'til I say, "Action." Oh, here comes the Hardcore life. Put your money where your mouth is tonight. Leave your make-up on & I'll leave on the light. Come over here babe & talk in the mic. Oh yeah I hear you now. It's gonna be one hell of a night. You can't be a spectator. Oh no. You got to take these dreams & make them whole. Oh this is Hardcore - there is no way back for you. Oh this is Hardcore - this is me on top of you & I can't believe that it took me this long. That it took me this long.
This is the eye of the storm. It's what men in stained raincoats pay for but in here it is pure. Yeah. This is the end of the line. I've seen the storyline played out so many times before. Oh that goes in there. Then that goes in there. Then that goes in there. Then that goes in there. & then it's over. Oh, what a hell of a show but what I want to know: what exactly do you do for an encore? 'Cos this is Hardcore.
Metallica performing during there "justice for all tour", which reminds me i saw them performing on that tour and had such a Amazing time!! the song is from there first album "Kill 'em all",what can i say Metallica Rocks my socks off :P
Brilliant disco / new wave crossover by the Nick Straker Band. A song about walking in the park to escape all your troubles. It fixes everything don't you know.... well, if you have this on your headphones. Love it.
The House of Love - such an under-rated band, and one I will post more of in the future. They were on Creation Records (JAMC, MBV, Slowdive etc) and produced beautiful, sad pop records with swirling guitars and a dark undercurrent. 'Christine' is one of my favourites, I like the way the mood of the song switches back and forth between uplifting pop and dark psychedelia. Perfect soundtrack for 'morning-after' shame, sat in your room wracked with guilt and embarassment, or just when you miss someone, or regret something.
I do love everything that's creepy and kooky but i also do loveThe Munsters Family. So Here is to them, all the people out there that are a bit...unusual but who wouldn't have it any other way.
There are some days, when you think so many people are quiet full of themselves, you wished that they would stop to take each other for granted, truly be in the moment, alive, daring, honest and in the habit to be respectful toward each other. Then you listen to The Rollins Band, fronted by none other than the Fucking Brilliant Henry Rollins ( In case you didn't know.), then you watch the " Liar" Video and you laugh....but really, it's not funny.
This song is like a Lullaby, a remembrance of been homesick but still never wanting to go back to my country, it's beautiful and still hunts me to this day.The Heart Throbs indeed.
I was around 8 years old the first time i encounter the force of nature that is Nina Hagen, she was wearing a tinsel disco wig, striped black and yellow footless tights and that superb expressive face, i couldn't take my eyes off the T.V screen, then she started singing New York, New York. My view and taste about music where never the same after that. Nina Hagen is the definition of what it means to be unique, creative and god damned talented. she stills inspires me greatly today and i urge anyone who see themselves as open minded individuals when it regards music to get some of her stuff. Anyhow there definitely will be more of Nina's songs coming along the way.
People love Leonard Cohen's early work, and I do too. But the one album which really grabbed me was 'I'm Your Man' (1988). I think the slick 80s production and almost sleazy, crooner thing suited him miles better than the folky singer-songwriter one. My dad is a huge Leonard Cohen fan and this the album I remember being played around the house most when growing up. This is undoubtedly my favourite from that album but it's all more or less flawless. It's a brooding, monochrome and heavily politicised song but one hell of a tune because of that. These two verses are my favourite...
'They sentenced me to twenty years of boredom For trying to change the system from within I'm coming now, I'm coming to reward them First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin......
Ah you loved me as a loser, but now you're worried that I just might win You know the way to stop me, but you don't have the discipline How many nights I prayed for this, to let my work begin First we take Manhattan, then we take Berlin'
I would like to take you on a little journey, i have had this song stuck in my head all day and i though that i would love to make you discover all the different interpretations of it, so let's go first with the original, Roy Harper's Another Day:
Now let's go and check what kate Bush and Peter Gabriel are up to:
"Genius!" i say....Now if you still are not conquered get your tissues out, smokes or whatever it is you need, as this version is so beautiful and i absolutely Love it.This Mortal Coil Ft Liz Frazer from The Amazing Cocteau Twins.
This is where our little journey's end, hope you enjoyed it. S.M
German pop from Die Doraus und Der Marinas. Andreas Dorau wrote and released this song in 1981 when he was just 16 and it was a bit hit in Germany. Reminds me of early 2009, of Homerton. Being surrounded by antiques in a pokey council estate flat eating pasta everyday and walking for miles to the Dalston job centre - dark days. But everytime I'd listen to this song I'd forget all that and think about an alien from Jupiter called Fred, wondering what all those other German words meant.
Oh, my, while i am happy to be in London, i have to admit that i needed some sunny eighties vibe to make me giggle and dance around as the cold is returning. It also brings me back to memory lane of Dear Old L.A, days spent by the swimming pool, peanut M&M's, not understanding a word of English but hey The Go-Go's are playing in the background, we are having so much fun and everything is fine.
I could elaborate on the subject of Mojave 3 previous amazing band, but we will eventually get to that at a later time, for right now i was thinking can i find a better song to end the day with? And the answer is "NO". This is perfect, at least for myself and my creative daze, a song that sets softly just like today's morning mist. Hope you enjoy.
Fad Gadget, or Frank (Tovey) as his parents probably called him. He was signed to the pioneering Mute records label started by Daniel Miller, making industrial/electronic pop music which really no-one has come close to matching. His 'hit' songs, like 'Ricky's Hand', 'Back To Nature' and 'Lady Shave' are some of the most inspired and original of the early 80s British electronic scene. But as important to the Fad Gadget experience as the music, was the performance. Here's an example from a TV appearance, 'Collapsing New People'. Just brilliant.
The Runaways movie is about to come out, does it mean we are up for a well deserved Lita Ford revival ? I definitely hope so ! I choose this song of all Lita's songs (for right now!) as i always loved the video, why?...to put it in simple words: One: Lita Rocks and sure knows how to play her guitar. Two: Ahuman giving a blood transfusion to an electric guitar, someone had to do it ! Three: I will say it again, Lita Rocks !
Some of you might be hanging on the though of that next pay day after all the Christmas and New Year shenanigans, or you're simply always....broke.If there's a song to sing along to while enduring the monetary blues, it would have to be Precious Bryant's "Broke and ain't got a dime". So good you still will sing it when your pockets are full of marbles and coins. S.M
EVERYTHING COUNTS - DEPECHE MODE I first came across this song when a friend living in Manchester put it on what was probably the first compilation CD (as a pose to tape) I had ever recieved.I suppose this must have been around 2003 as I remember playing that CD to death at the time I had just moved to uni in London. In that first term I often felt a bit homesick and alienated, and this despondent, hopeless pop song for some reason struck a chord with me. The lyrics ('the grabbing hands, grab all they can', 'it's a com-pet-it-ive world') are clearly about Thatcher-ite, yuppie greed and the darkside of the 80s boom, which started with all that happy, loud, colourful fun - defined by Depeche Mode's own 'Just Can't Get Enough' etc. but though it was obviously about all of that, that wasn't really the point for me. I just related to the sadness and resignation of it in those confused, lonely moments. I didn't feel like that all the time, but when I did this is what i'd listen to. That CD was part of my education in synth pop too (another stand out from that disc being 'Flamboyant' by the Pet Shop Boys) and made me realise that electronic music could be emotional. By far my favourite Mode track.
